Cigarette Smoking
ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the electronic cigarettes smoking and
perception among youth.
Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among students of Punjab
University, Lahore. Data was collected using internet survey from convenient
sample of 290 students. Information was collected about demographic
characteristics and student’s perception about E-cigarette smoking. SPSS 23.0
was used for data entry and analysis.
Results: In this study a
total of 290 students from University of Punjab, participated in this study.
The most of the sample comprised of male students (60%) aged between 18 to 22
years (61%), and belong to urban areas (70%). A large number of students (45%)
were regular smokers and an overwhelming number of students (18%) were e-cigarette
smokers. The main source of learning e-cigarette was friends (65%). Most
students (71%) start e-cigarette smoking at the age of adolescence. Above half
of the students (52.4%) think that people start e-cigarette smoking for fun.
The study shows that e-cigarette smokers got average marks in examination (54%).
The perception of respondents were that the majority (58.3%) used e-cigarette
makes people cool. The (89.3%) people know the major risk factor is cancer due
to smoking. The respondents (39%) were agreed that e-cigarette smoking is
harmful than regular smoking. Extremely (93%) students does not want him life
partner as a smoker.
Conclusions: A
considerable students were regular cigarette smokers and e-cigarette smokers.
The perception of respondents were that the majority used e-cigarette makes
people cool and starts e-cigarette smoking for fun. Awareness
program should be arranged on regular basis to raise awareness regarding health
and social harm effects of e-cigarette smoking at university level.
